HUNTSVILLE, TX - AUGUST: After a decade of unparalleled expansion, the Texas prison system receives new prisoners, transferred from the county jails where they were sentenced, in August of 2000 at the Holiday Unit in Huntsville, Texas. Upon arrival, officers search for evidence of gang tattoos, which if found, will mean the prisoner is assigned to an administrative segregation wing of a prison, where their movement is severely restricted. The prisoners will be processed, given state clothing, assigned a prison number , and at a classification meeting, assigned to one of the over 100 Texas Department of Criminal Justice prisons across the state.(Photo by Andrew Lichtenstein/Corbis via Getty Images)
